Study Portfolio

The qualifications framework of Doctoral College UK (DCUK) is designed to provide a structured pathway that prepares candidates for advanced doctoral-level research. The framework combines preparatory research training, academic development, and applied research outputs that progressively build a candidate’s capability as an independent researcher. Collectively, these components amount to 270 credits, broadly equivalent to a Postgraduate MPhil-level research qualification. Note this is the mid study point for the PhD qualification and normally takes 2 years for a 4 year PhD hybrid work-based qualification.

The DCUK education pathway includes the following stages and qualifications:

  1. Access to Doctorate – 20 Credits
This introductory stage prepares candidates for doctoral-level study. It focuses on foundational academic skills including critical thinking, academic writing, research awareness, and orientation to doctoral expectations. The module ensures that candidates understand the structure of research degrees and are equipped to begin advanced research training.

  2. Extended Advanced Diploma in Research – 180 Credits
This substantial component represents the core research training stage and is broadly equivalent to the first year of a PhD programme. Students develop advanced competence in research design, literature review development, research methodology, and proposal formulation. The programme emphasises the development of a coherent research project aligned with the candidate’s professional or academic interests.

  3. Research Practice Conference Poster Presentation (Literature Review) – 35 Credits
Candidates present a structured academic poster based on their developing literature review at a research practice conference environment. This assessment encourages scholarly communication, synthesis of key theoretical debates, and the ability to visually and academically present research arguments to an academic audience.

  4. Research Practice Journal Publication (Methodology) – 35 Credits
At this stage, students prepare a publishable journal-style article focusing on their research methodology. The assessment demonstrates the candidate’s ability to justify research design, methodological choices, data collection strategies, and analytical approaches within a scholarly publication format.

Together these components total 270 credits, forming an integrated research preparation framework that culminates in a qualification comparable to a Postgraduate MPhil-level achievement. The structure enables candidates to progressively develop the intellectual discipline, research competence, and scholarly communication skills necessary to undertake independent doctoral research.

This staged approach reflects the commitment of Doctoral College UK to providing a clear and supportive pathway from early doctoral preparation to advanced research capability, ensuring that candidates are fully equipped to contribute meaningful knowledge within their professional and academic fields.
