Become a PhD Supervisor

Who is this course for? 

This course is for anyone who is currently supervising Masters dissertation students, who is seeking to be supervising PhD students in the near future.  It is also for returning supervisors to get back up to date.

When should I do this course? 

It is a University expectation that all new PhD supervisors complete this course and that it is repeated every 5 years.  If you are new to PhD supervision, or new to PhD supervision, you will ideally complete this course before you begin supervising a PhD student.  

 

If you are an experienced supervisor you are required to complete the training every 5 years. The course is always available so you can dip back into it at any time to refresh your knowledge of specific areas.

How long will it take to complete?  

We estimate that it would take 1 year part time to complete the course as it is practice based in a supervisory team. To complete the course, and in order for your completion to be recorded, you must work through all learning material and complete the required practice activities.

Does this course fulfil the compulsory training requirements for PhD Supervisors? 

Yes, but your College or School will need to see your certification.

​Stages of Doctoral Supervisor Academic Training

 

Becoming a competent 2nd Supervisor                                           

The role of second supervisor is always to provide academic support alongside that of the Director of Studies. However, the role of the second supervisor varies according to the nature of the research student's research and the makeup of the supervisory team.

Becoming an effective Director of Studies                                          

The main qualities of a good PhD Director of Studies is knowledgeable about both the material, field and methods you'll be using. Organised in their approach, group and projects, supportive of your work and personal goals and circumstances, and reasonable in their expectations, approach and relationships.

Becoming a reflective Mentor Supervisor â€‹â€‹â€‹

The mentor supervisor should be someone who is inspiring and uplifting, who helps their trainee supervisor reach new heights. Someone is not a good mentor supervisor if they lack enthusiasm and interest in their role as your mentor and do not offer verbal and knowledgeable reflective encouragement.​
